This product is from the SheaMoisture kids line and while it is similar to the Curl Enhancing Smoothie, it is not the same product.  When SheaMoisture burst on the scene many years ago I purchased the CES  to use as a styler and twist cream.  This was when I learned my hair did not like creams to use as wash n go stylers and that heavy butter products were too heavy for my hair.  My hair is very mucilage loving. Snotty, slimy components of aloe, okra, flaxseed, as well as herbs of Irish Moss, Slippery Elm, Marshmallow Root, Blue Malva and Burdock Root are all components of my favorite hair products.  If you glance the ingredient list of the CES as compared to CBC you will see the difference is Slippery Elm and Marshmallow extracts.  While these herbs may be small components their presence makes a huge difference.Wet Braid-Out Shea Moisture Curling Butter Cream

5 Things I Love About This Product

  1. It has a light coconut scent. SheaMoisture products are known for their sweet, heavy scents.  Me personally I am not a fan of heavily scented products so I much prefer the softness of this scent.
  2. It is a cream-gel hybrid, a true pudding. It works well as a moisturizing styler and is amazing as a twist cream.  It is great for setting twists or braids for the perfect out style.
  3. It packs a punch. You know when you read the directions and it lists to use a dime or nickel sized amount? Well you really only need a small amount of the CBC to moisturize your hair.  In fact I use a nickel size amount for each quarter of my hair.
  4. It is widely available.  So many of the products I like are available online only or if they are in stores they are not in the market where I live. This product is available throughout the US in a variety of retailers.
  5. While it is marketed for children, it is actually ideal fine, thin, or medium to low porosity hair.

Dry Braid Out Shea Moisture Curling Butter CreamI’ve been using this product a lot more the past few months. In fact I kind of forgot about it and how much I loved it until my more recent travels. When traveling it is important to pack light and I try to use products that serve multiple purposes. I use this as a leave-in, styler and sealant all in one. Also the small six ounce size makes it easy to store away. To use, I normally start with dry hair and spritz lightly with water.  I section my head into quadrants and use a fingertip full on each section. Lightly comb or brush through the section then style into three to four twists or braids. In the morning I release and separate the braids or twists for a fabulous out style. Boom.

Jessicurl Wants You to Play the Name Game

Jessi

Jessi, jessi, bo bessi,

Banana fana, fo fessi,

fee, fi, mo messi,

JESSI

I am so proud to share with you some news I’ve kept mum since this beginning of this year. Jessicurl has been providing the curly haired crowd with awesome products for 11 years and is releasing a new strong-hold styler this October. With Jess being a super duper awesome person who I am proud to call friend I was selected to be a tester of this gel unofficially nicknamed *ahem* Yetti Juice — don’t ask. Jessicurl firm hold styler natural hair

You know I have my favorite gels and I am really happy with the results I get from this product. Is it better than my favs?  Honestly, no. But does it do a damn good job? Absolutely. This styler provides a stronger hold than previous Jessicurl products that moisturize well for me but are not optimum stylers for my hair needs.  This product keeps my curls poppin without creating a crunchy helmet that I get from most strong hold gels. I can get 2-3 day hair from one application. [See photo above for actual results]

Now the name game. While Jess has put all her neurons into creating this product she is left out on a limb with what to call it. That is where you come in.  Jessicurl is hosting a contest to name the new product, and the selected winner not only gain the admiration of curly girls all over the world, but they will also receive $500 in Jessicurl product. Umm yeah, that is a whole love of Deep Conditioning Treatment, my fav product from the line. Click this link for details how to enter.

For some added help here are a few deets about the product:

  • The product is white in color and sticky to touch sort of like glue.
  • It is more creamy than gel-like in texture.
  • The product is liquid and definitely belongs in a bottle, not a jar.
  • I would refer to this as a medium styler on the broad product spectrum, but the manufacturer considers it a firm styler as compared to other products in their line.

Submit your entries to Jessicurl and good luck!

Product Review Donna Marie Miracurl Curling Gelly

Donna Marie

Miracurl Curling Gelly

18 oz for $21.00

ing: Purified water, aloe vera juice,  vegetable glycerin,  Provitamin B-5, avocado oil,  Linseed extract, herbal infusion of plantago extract, Rosemary, Slippery elm and hibiscus, xanthan gum, alkanet root, potassium sorbate, silver citrate, citric acid and fragrance.

From the manufacturer: This super hold, moisturizing natural styling gel is perfect for wash n’ go styling and defining hard to hold curls. Works for ALL curl types. Provides uniform, defined, elongated, moisturized and FRIZZ FREE curls and gives it the extra strength hold your curls need to last for days.  Also, works wonderfully on puffs, twist-sets, braid-sets and any styles that need a super hold.

This gel has been around for a while and is by no means a new kid on the block but it is a new addition to my Holy Grail list.  I received this product from my friend Nu, who did not have luck with it and gave it to me to try out.  It was love from the first application.  I am a gel girl, my hair loves aloe based gels for wash-n-go styles and this gel was no exception. I have used it several times with different leave-ins and it performed well but my favorite combo is to use Kinky Curly Knot Today underneath.  See my vid below for how I applied.

The MCG smells nice though I cannot exactly place the fragrance but I pick up notes of sweet floral scents.  The product is very gelatinous as if you stirred up some gelatin after it was set.  I have to rub it in my hands before smoothing it on my hair to get even coverage.  You want to be careful not to apply to much or you can get flakes once it dries (similar to KCCC).  Also, I would not recommend using it with a leave-in that is high in glycerin as this product is also high in glycerin which may result in white clumps in your hair.  I think MCG performs very well and gives me results consistent to KCCC, however it costs less which is a huge boost.  Added bonus, Donna Marie has brought back the Friday Flash Sale! Product Review: Shea Moisture Curling Souffle

SheaMoisture

Organic Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Souffle

12 oz, $11.99

Available at Target, Walgreens and CVS stores

I did not purchase this product, but was sent to review by the manufacturer.  Truth be told I met a company rep at a hair meet-up and was asked what I thought about their products.  I told them the truth: I didn’t really like them.  The products are shea heavy and contain protein two things my hair doesn’t care for.  However my daughter liked them on her hair.  The rep remembered my honest opinion and the week before the release of this product I was asked if I would like to do a review.  I was honored to be asked especially because I had a less than stellar opinion of previous products I tried.  She asked me to try it out and be honest so here is my review.

ing: Aqueous infusion of agave tequilana leaf extract and sugar cane extract, pectin, vegetable glycerin, Baobab pulp, Coconut oil, Shea Butter, Pro Vitamin B-5, Aloe Barbadensis leaf extract, Vitamin E, Flaxseed extract, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract, potassium sorbate, essential oil blend. *note i used the common names as opposed to the scientific as I did not feel like typing them out*

Before the product arrived I read up on all available information including this article on naturallycurly.com which gave a rundown of each ingredients and its purpose.  I will admit that I was super excited after reading the ingredient list.  I often do an agave/coconut oil pre-poo treatment on my hair which always looks great and wondered why no one has used them together in a product. Genius!  I was also excited that there were no strong protein additives which would surely spell disaster for my hair.  Once the product was released I saw several reviews on youtube that called the product greasy, said it weighed down their hair and was too sticky.  I took all of these comments under review to the use of the product.

I applied the product to freshly cleansed damp hair.  Because others had reported that it was oily or greasy I opted not to use a leave in.  I divided my hair into 8 sections and smoothed a quarter-sized amount over each section to avoid it from weighing down my hair.  Admittedly the product is overly oily, sticky and could weigh your hair down if you apply it with a heavy-hand.

So this is me after application *shrug* it looked okay but nothing to write home about.  My hair was sticky/tacky feeling and so was the back of my neck where my hair was laying on it.  My hair also felt fairly oily, but did not look greasy.  My curls were not really defined or poppin just sort of there.  I decided to plop my hair up on top of my head and let it dry for an hour before heading out.  This proved to be golden.  After about an hour my hair had absorbed most the oil from the product and was less tacky though it was still noticeable.  I did like the curl elongation or anti-shrinkage results except for the front crown where I have wavy hair which just looked a little limp.  In defense of this product my hair in the front looks limp with most products due to lite curl pattern.  I did love the add’l weight the product provided which gave my hair good movement and body while maintaining volume.

I opted to tie back my hair and went out to celebrate dinner with my curl friends.  I must say I received many compliments on how my hair looked.  The picture above was taken 4 hours after application: minimal shrinkage, light shine, and hang time.  My curls felt soft and maintained their “wet” curl pattern however the tacky feel was still present, now I know why others don’t use agave in products -_-

5 Things I Like About This Product

  • Awesome natural ingredients.
  • Once fully released the product will be readily available in most markets on the ground and has a fair price point.
  • The scent smells nice  but is not overbearing like previous products I tried from this line.
  • I was able to get 2nd day hair from a single application.  I put my scarf on at night, then in the a.m. I spritzed my hair with plain water and fluffed with my fingers.
  • It did not dry hard like many gels or definers.  There was no crunch at all, not even a crisp.

However There Are A Few Things I Didn’t Like Opportunities for Improvement

  • Less oil please!  I am medium porosity and am not a fan of most shea based products or heavy oils as they sit on top of my hair.  While this was the best experience so far I have had with this line it’s still is a little too oily for my liking. I think high porosity naturals will probably like the amount of oil.
  • Sticky hair is just tacky.  (Punny right?, lol) I love the way my curls respond to agave nectar, but I do not like the feeling of sticky hair.  It was still sticky on day two. I need less tacky feeling.

Final thoughts on this product is that I would recommend it to others.  As for me I would not purchase it again without the improvements listed above.  I suffer from hand-in-hair syndrome so prefer touchably soft hair over good looking hair.  However if I was in need for a good on the ground product for wash-n-go I would grab it in a pinch.
