BASKing in the Truth

There have been lots of murmurs among the natural hair community about the state of company B.A.S.K.  Some worried the company was closing, others hinted at a corporate buyout and most of us feared we would need arm ourselves  to protect our stash of Cacao Bark Deep Conditioning Hair Treat. Well the rumors have been officially put the rest. Our beloved B.A.S.K. is rebranding.

BASK’s amazing products have been a hit in the natural hair and beauty market for years, often selling out at hair shows before the weekend is over and crashing network servers whenever a sale is posted.  The company has been growing at an alarming rate and that type of growth often results in restructuring and re-branding.

Meet BEKURA, pronounced bee-cure-ah, the new name of the specialty products line which means to be treasured.  They have promised to offer their signature products (& pricing) we have grown to love presented in new, upscale packaging. The new website (which is not up yet) will be live 10/1/14 and will be marked by a week-long celebration of new products, discounts and free deals. I am so excited, let me set my calendar reminder :)

Motions Straight Finish Memphis Style Event Recap + Giveaway

Motions Straight Finish

Around a month ago I was contacted to review the new Motions Straight Finish product line and to host an in-store meetup in Memphis, TN.  Check out my YT reviews of the product from curly to straight and back to curly again.  In short I think this system worked really well in protecting my hair from heat while straightening and my curls came bouncing back in just one wash.  For more info on where you can find these products check out Motion’s website.

My favorite thing about this blogging “fame” is to be able to assist people in their journey.  And hosting the Curly 2 Straight Tennessee Meetup allowed me to do just that. I met and interacted with so many wonderful natural women and provide advice on styling, techniques and establishing a regimen. All in all we had a really amazing time, check out some of the pictures from the event below.

Product Review: Amazing Botanicals Hibiscus Gel

amazing botanicals hibiscus gelAmazing Botanicals

Hibiscus Hair Gel

16 oz for $20.00

ing: distilled water, aloe gel, flaxseed, hibiscus tea infusion, optiphen, black castor oil, safflower oil, glycerin, xantham gum

The great people at Amazing Botanicals contacted me about wanting to do a giveaway back in December which went great.  They were also kind enough to send me products to check them out for myself.  At the time I was on a use-up-the-stash product purge trying to  finish all my partially used products.  I have a LOT of products and it has seriously taken me this long to get to the new stuff. I know, just shake your head and keep reading.

I have now been natural for five years and I have tried my fair share of hair gels and definers and I have my obvious favorites. However, it is still fun to try out other gels based on ingredients to find other options that may be cheaper, available on the ground, or provide better results.

Amazing Botanicals Hibiscus Gel is a mucilage based, soft hold hair gel.  Mucilage meaning the ingredients are basically “snotty” as the main ingredients are aloe and flaxseed gel.  My hair loves mucilage gels they are great for curl defining and are moisturizing. The gel has a medium viscosity and is very easy to apply. The smell has a light tea scent.

5 Things I Love About This Product

  1. Soft holding, my hair was not crunchy or dry feeling.
  2. Smells delightful, light tea scent.
  3. Great ingredients.
  4. Nice price, at $20 for 16 ounces that comes down to $1.25 per ounce which is a great price.
  5. Non-sticky feeling easy to apply. The product also rinses clean from the hair no need  to clarify or use a strong shampoo to cleanse after application.

I applied this product in the same manner I apply my other gels. I applied kinky curly knot today to soaking wet hair then smoothed the gel on top.  It took approximately 5 hours for my hair to air dry which is pretty normal for me.  The gel performed similarly as other soft hair gels for me.  The downside for me is that I can only get 2-day hair using this gel. To refresh my hair in the morning I lightly spritz with water. On day 3 I could have pulled my hair into a puff, but that was as much use as I could get.  I would purchase the gel again if it was on sale it is a nice gel to have on hand for a quick wash n go.  It will not replace my favorite wash n go gels however.

Eden BodyWorks New Coconut Shea Products + Sale

Okay the very LAST thing I need is more hair products, lets just be real. I have more than I can ever need or use on my hair.  I have put myself on an unofficial no-buy and have been on a use-up-the-stash cleanse to get rid of older products.

Then Eden BodyWorks comes out with this new Coconut Shea product line and it has my credit card finger itching.  I still have products from this line including a deep conditioner, shampoo and conditioner that I have NOT used, yet I want to buy MORE!!! *smh*

Product Review: Blensblend 3-in-1 Conditioner

I stumbled across this product one late night on one of the many natural hair message boards I follow.  What immediately grabbed my attention was the low-waste packaging the product is sold in. I did a google search for the product and my interest was immediately perked with the ingredients list of the conditioner. The owner Marina was sweet enough to send me a package of the Blensblend 3-in-1 Conditioner, Blensblend Hair & Body Butter and Blensblend Charmeuse Silk Sleep Cap.

blensblend 3 in 1 conditioner

Blensblend 3-in-1 Conditioner

8.5 oz $9.25

Ing: Purified Water, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Behetrimonium Methosulfate, Cetearyl Alcohol (conditioning alcohol), Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5), (Vegetable) Glycerin, Emulsifying Wax NF, Cetyl Alcohol NF (conditioning alcohol), Avena Sativa (Oat) Extract, Prunus Ameniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Benzoic Acid, Dehyroacetic Acid, Fragrance (Natural Essential Oils), Potassium Sorbate. Caprylyl Glycol and Sorbic Acid may be substituted for Benzoic Acid and Dehydroacetic Acid. *May contain trace amounts of Shea butter.

Blensblend 3-in-1 Conditioner claims to be a detangler, rinse-out and leave-in conditioner all in one.  Water based conditioner is formulated with Grape seed oil, BTMS, Cetearyl Alcohol, and Pro-Vitamin B-5.  It is also contains Oat Protein, which is an okay protein for my protein sensitive hair but other PS curlies need to be advised that while it is not a strong protein it is still present. I have used this product twice, once as a rinse-out conditioner, then again as a deep conditioner and a leave-in conditioner.

5 Things I Like About This Product

  1. The packaging. I mean it is the whole reason I paid any attention to the product to begin with. The flexible pouches mean low waste and they can be shipped in variety of ways which means diversity in shipping costs for the consumer. Win!
  2. The ingredients.  This product is very well formulated with quality, vegan ingredients. I love that it is free of mineral oil, petrochemicals, phthalates and as an added plus is not tested on animals.
  3. Super concentrated.  This product is very thick and you truly only need a small amount to apply to the hair. I used between a nickel to a quarter-sized amount per each quadrant of my head.
  4. Great for variety of hair types.  I don’t think this product will be an everything product for everyone, but I think everyone will use it for something.  For those with dry, thirsty hair it will work great as a leave-in to quench your curls.  For those who need a quick shot of moisture use as a rinse-out.  I really loved it as a deep conditioner; honestly it was so good I did not want to rinse it out.
  5. Great value. Just over $1 per ounce this meets my standard for boutique product.  Especially considering this product can be used for multiple types of conditioners it is a great deal.

I am very pleased with this product and I will be adding it to my list.  I will keep you guys updated on sales and deals so you can check it out.  One thing to note is to make sure you add the product to soaking wet hair, it is very concentrated and the water will help distribute it amongst your strands.  For me after I deep conditioned I only partially rinsed out the product and used the residual as a leave in to twist my hair with a little oil on top to seal in moisture.
