Fix Your Hair

For every one of us who have ever been told to “fix your hair” or asked “when are you going to *do* something to it” this poem is for you.  I love the passion and history with which she speak.  The closing line is my favorite: You can’t fix what was never broken.

Aevin’s In Touch

aevin dugas in touch

Did you see this? Yes, that is miss Aevin Dugas featured in In Touch magazine. I do not buy celeb mags, but when I saw that Aevin was in it I had to rush out and support. In her interview Aevin talks about what it is like to have the World’s Largest Afro and her hair routine.  I am glad to see natural hair in the media and so happy she got this feature.

Janelle Monae is the New Covergirl

I love Janelle Monae, she can do no wrong in my book. Her perfectly coiffed hair and sleek style are a radiant example of positive images for Black women.  Thankfully others have also taken notice and she has been selected as the new face of Covergirl, Brown girls win.

Check out these pictures from her photo shoot featured in Vogue magazine.

For more pictures check out Covergirl on Pinterest.

Lastly here’s a cute ditty Jane did with the Covergirl jingle; she is definitely easy, breezy and beautiful!

Swag Me Out: Derby City Naturals On Essence

Yeah, this happened!

Yep that’s right Derby City Naturals hosts National Natural Hair Meetup Day Event was featured at Essence online!

The lovely, dimpled face featured to rep us Derby City girls is no other than my bestie Nu.  Her gorgeous curls and captivating smile really capture the essence of this event. (Punny, I know).  A complete recap of the event with more pictures is in the works but for now make sure you scroll through the gallery on Essence and check out our hot hair.

In case you didn’t know, National Natural Hair Meetup Day is an annual one-day event which was held this year on May 19, 2012. Its purpose is to allow the opportunity for women across the U.S. to meet in their own communities while networking, sharing and connecting virtually with other women across the country participating in meetups on the same day. Natural hair meetups are events designed to share information, techniques, inspiration and products to aid individuals in their natural hair journey.  I would like to thank Adeea aka The Trendy Socialite and the rest of the NNHMD team for pulling off a fantastic idea.

A super-big-shot-out to my photographer Debra Brown, aka one-shot-Debra, for capturing all the head shots of the attendees. You did a GREAT job!

Next year’s Inter-National Natural Hair Meetup Day Event will be held on May 18, 2013. So mark you calendars!

The Coiffure Project: Natural Hair Photography by Glenford Nunez

If you follow Derby City Naturals on FB then you should have seen my fake Tumblr album. It is a collection of photos I have ran across on the internet that I feel embody the culture of natural hair.  One of my subbies shared a link to The Coiffure Project and I immediately fell in love.  My first thought was: wow a photographer who finally gets it!  I wanted to share every single photo I saw but decided just to share a few and give you guys a link to check out the entire album.  You will not be disappointed.

Glenford Nunez is the photographer and owner of TYP Photography Studio in Baltimore, Md and the creator of The Coiffure Project.  He started this project because he felt that woman with natural hair were notably absent from quality photo galleries of the fashion and art world (I agree).  Click this link to check out the complete gallery.  He also accepts submissions, so if you would like to be part of The Coiffure Project please email cd@typBaltimore.com with recent photos.

That’s What Curlfriends Are For

I have some pretty awesome curlfriends.  I have spoke about them in various posts but I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight a few and share their awesomeness with you.

Lolie is my sista from another mista.  She is a brilliant entrepreneur and owner of Found Naturally, a natural hair store based in St Louis, MO.  Check out her e-store naturallythestore.com and watch because she has great sales too.

Brokey is a brilliant and talented writer.  You have probably read one of her fantastic pieces and may have not even known it.  Plus she can work a no-fail bantu knot-out.  Check out her amazing natural hair blog: naturalhairproblems.tumblr.com.

Tanya is a great YouTuber.  She loves to try new products and travels a lot for her job so she is always good at discovering new products across the country and letting you know which products will work in a HAIRmergency even in the middle of nowhere.  Check her out on YT Tanya10312000.

Tracie is an aesthetician like no other.  She has been in the skincare game for years and is often called upon to train those in the field on how to step their game up.  She is also an LMT so she can hook up all your beauty needs: skincare, facials, massages, waxing, eyebrow shaping, the works! Check out her FB page and if you are local to Louisville, KY make an appointment with her at the salon by calling 502-423-3239.

I have to be honest and say I have never met Rory in real life, but she has provided me with so much encouragement as a blogger, vlogger and in life that I feel as if we are just connected.  I cannot say enough about the excellent job she does on Boo’s hair, not just as a White mother, but as a mother period!  Check out ChocolateHairVanillaCare.com

Pamela, Mz Jenkins if you nasty, is a fabulous natural hair product manufacturer and owner of Koils by Nature.  Sure she sponsors giveaways for me, but trust me when I say I really buy her products–she ain’t about to give everything away!  I buy her stuff for myself and send to my family as gifts– she even did a special gift wrap for my brother’s birthday.  If you love them men in your life get them some of her butter and throw out that Duke!

3 things I love: red hair, curly hair and positive spirit.  Is it any wonder that me and Jessica of Jessicurl became fast friends?  Jess is such an awesome person and very down to Earth.  She is also proof that this white hair/black hair division is just foolish.  Good hair products are formulated to treat hair needs and care nothing of race.  Check out Jessicurl.com her Deep Conditioning Treatment is on some grown woman sh*t.

Unfortunately Jess will NOT be at the WNHS this weekend, however she did bestow on me a parting gift for three of my curlfriends!  I have TWO coupon codes to receive 25% off your order at jessicurl.com.  And 1 free shipping coupon code  The first three people to request the codes will get them.  Coupons expire 5/1/2012, serious inquiries only!

These are just a few of my awesome amigas.  Stay tuned for future posts on other naturals I know, that you should know too!

Te’Anna Made the Final Four

Spring is know for its competition as Mach Madness is upon us.  And while in the world of college basketball we will see cinderella stories, heartbreak and fierce competition, here in the world of natural hair we have a competition of our own.

Each Spring we crown the new World’s Next Top Natural Hair Model and this year Louisville’s very of Te’Anna Williams has made it to the FINAL FOUR!

I was so excited to hear that my curlfriend and occasional stylist had made it this far in the competition and I will be there to cheer her on for the crown.  Te’Anna shared her natural hair story with me in a previous interview and I cannot wait to do another interview with her to find out what it feels like to make it to the finals so be on the lookout for that.

Thank you to all of those who took the time to vote for Te’Anna.  There is still time to purchase your tickets for the World Natural Hair Show in Atlanta April 28-29th 2012.
