Fro Fashion Week

It is no exaggeration when I say that Fro Fashion Week is bar none my favorite natural hair event period.  It is the perfect mix of grand scale hair show but still has a small meetup feel.  How is that possible? Well in short because Tarin Boone, the show’s creator, is nothing short of amazing.

Tarin Boone Mattie James

I attended Fro Fashion Week for the first time in Fall of 2012.  I have wanted to attend the event for some time but it never seemed to quite fit into my schedule. But then there was a discount code and I was able to snatch up a ticket on the low so I made plans to be in attendance.  I am so glad that I did.

5 Reasons You Need To Go To Fro Fashion Week

  1. This is the best organized event I have ever attended. Not just hair event but professional and educational events as well.  Tarin is supported by close friends, family and volunteers who truly love and support her vision and it shows.  There was always someone around to provide assistance and make you feel welcome.
  2. Variety of workshops of varying interest.  I rarely attend workshops when I go to hair events because they either do not have topic that interests me or it is something that has been over done. That was not the case.  My favorite workshop I attended was a DIY Makeup workshop taught by Santyonne of Pura Body Naturals. Not only did I learn a lot we also got to take with us some great makeup swag.
  3. Exclusive meet and greet time with top product manufacturers.  There were several sponsored product suites where you could meet with the manufacturer like Curls Unleashed and really talk to them about their products and your hair needs.  They also had licensed stylists on hand to style your hair for you.
  4. The After-Party.  So I’ve heard a lot about these parties but could not believe how much fun we had.  Natural girls really know how to cut loose and have a good time.  We most certainly tore up the dance floor AND there were great giveaways too.
  5. The Blogger Brunch. This is my favorite event of the weekend.  Tarin is a natural hair blogger and for her to make it a point to create a special event just for bloggers is awesome and amazing.  All bloggers are invited from those with 5 or 5,000 followers, no discrimination.  I truly enjoyed the private time we had to discuss how to improve our craft and to discuss with each other our challenges and successes.

Fro Fashion Week Spring 2013 is this weekend March 2nd and 3rd (but there are events occurring all week long).  If you can make it out even for a day I promise you it will be worth it.  I will be making the drive solo to attend on Saturday and then heading back Sunday so pray for some traveling grace. World Natural Hair Show 2011 Spring Recap

Monica, Me & L BBFs

This past weekend me and 53 of my closest friends visited the World Natural Hair Show.  It truly was a magnificent time as this was the first “natural” hair show I have ever been to.  I was able to meet some of my blogger friends in real life (s/o to Natural Review and Knapsgirl), talk with my favorite vendors(Jessicurl, Koils by Nature, Pura Body Naturals, Jane Carter Solution), sample products I was interested in (Uncle Funky’s Daughter) and best of all fellowship with fellow naturals (including Taren916 NaturalChica and LethalPleazure).

Some people did not have as awesome time as I did so I decided to share my tips for making the most of your next show!

1.  Buy your tickets beforehand.  A lot of naturals complained about having to wait in line for 2 hours just to buy a ticket. You should always pre-pay your ticket and have them mailed to you or pick them up in will-call.

Rashida was exhausted from waiting in line

2.  Carry cash.  There were problems with the credit card machines, long lines at the ATMs and vendors who only accepted cash. Avoid the hassle of waiting in line, searching for ATMs and paying convenience fees by taking your cash with you.

3.  Make a budget.  At the end of the trip many had buyers remorse from over-spending on what they thought was a great deal, then later realizing they had spent to much and would have to deal with the repercussions.  Make yourself a budget include in it money for products, food, travel, tips, etc and carry cash. When the money is gone stop spending.

4.  Contact your favorite vendors.  Before traveling to the show email your favorite vendors and ask them if they will be at the show.  Find out their booth number and ask what specials or deals they will have.  This way you are sure to catch the best prices on your favorite things.  Also by letting them know you are coming by they may offer you an extra thank you gift.

5.  Bring a large empty bag to haul your goodies.  Jimmy of Natural Alternatives Salon was kind enough to sponsor our group with large canvas bags that were very roomy and sturdy. I was able to carry a whole days swag, along with food, change of shoes and my purse.  Out bags were so nice that many people asked where we purchased them.  My friend Monica said she would love to have one so I gave her mine.

6.  Do carry snacks and beverages.  Before leaving on the trip stop by your local grocery and load up on good, travel friendly snacks like granola bars, trail mix, jerky and bottles of water.  You will need to keep your energy up and there is not always easy access to food or beverages.

7. Wear comfy shoes.  Or bring a pair of flats with you.  Everyone wants to be cute and look their best, but you will be walking A LOT so make sure you take care of your feet.

8.  Seek out new vendors.  New product companies spring up everyday and there is no way to get to know all of them.  Most of the lesser known companies will not have long lines and are readily accessible.  Ask them about their product, how it should be used or if they are willing to do a live demo on your hair.  This is a great way to know about the product and the correct application.

9.  Ask for samples.  Some companies have no problem handing out free product at will, while the others will do it upon request or with a purchase.  So take the time and ask them for a product sample or ask if you can get a free sample with purchase.

10. Wear your hair wild and free.  While most of us want to be looking are most put together the truth is those with big braid/twist-outs or just rocking their large fros caught the most attention.  Also vendors are there for you to try their products/equipment.  Make it easy on yourself and just your hair out.  There are always stylist their looking to do live demos and you just may get a free style out of it.

DCN February 2012 Natural Hair Meetup Recap

We hadn’t had a meetup since before Christmas so I was really missing my curlfriends!  I planned a quick and easy meetup and product swap on a Sunday afternoon at the delicious Jason’s Deli.  I hadn’t seen some of my peeps in months so it was nice to see all the changes we have made to our hair: Big Chop, color and hair finally long enough for two-strand twists!

Here’s a brief overview and links to the topics we discussed

  1. Of course the moisture question came up.  Remember to keep your hair moisturized first start with water, then add water based moisturizer (water should be the first ingredient) and follow with a sealant (oil/butter/hair grease). Here are two fav posts on this topic: Moisture and Layering Products.
  2. The 2012 World Natural Hair Show is April 28-29 in Atlanta GA.  For more info on this year’s show go to the website.  We had an absolute blast last year, check out my recap post.
  3. Making your own products at home is so simple and easy.  Here are my two posts on making your own whipped shea butter recipe1 and recipe2.  If you are looking for some yummy scent oils check out
  4. For adding daily moisture to your hair I am a fan of Komaza Care Califia Spritz, check out my review. But you can also make your own spritz and customize it to your liking with this recipe.
  5. Some of my new favorite products I brought to share with you though I have not reviewed were Bee Mine Bee Hold Curly Butter, Donna Marie Super Butter Cream, Mozeke Sweet Almond Pudding all of which are great for two-strand twists.
  6. Spring is coming and we talked about vibrant new colors this season.  For more info on henna or coloring your hair check out the posts.
  7. Lastly our meetup for the month of March is this Saturday March 17th 2:00 pm @ CharizYa Fitness.  The theme of this month’s meetup is Working Out With Natural Hair.  We will give tips on the best styles while working out, products to use to cleanse and moisturize, and fitness tips from the expert Michelle Yeager Turner who will also lead us in a Zumba class. Click this link to RSVP.

I had so much fun reconnecting with old curlfriends and meeting new ones!  Here are a few pictures from the event. To see all the pics check out DCN FB Page Album.

October Natural Hair Meet-Up + Product Swap

It had been awhile since we had an opportunity to just get together and talk about hair, products and questions so I put together this event.  I was most excited as it was the first time I would see my cousin Pam, since she did her big chop (pictured above) I am so proud of her :)

There were several noobs so we went over a few of the basics about proper washing and conditioning, layering products, texture and porosity.  I had so much fun meeting and connecting with some many woman along their journey.  Below are a few shots from the night, go here to see the complete album.
