From their website: This intensive antioxidant-rich treatment helps to perfect and renew vibrancy to brittle, lackluster hair. When used weekly in our 10-IN-1 RENEWAL SYSTEM, it treats damaged hair while providing anti-aging benefits, color protection, hydration, nourishment, rejuvenation, strength, anti-stress, deep conditioning, softness and shine. Counteract signs of aging by nourishing the scalp with our SuperFruit Complex and infusing hair with ultra-moisturizing Marula Oil and Biotin.

Add this to the ever growing list of Shea Moisture product lines. I can appreciate that they strive to make products that target specific hair needs. I think everyone can find at least one product line that they love. Then there are those of us who are down to try a new product just because. I have tried the Tahitian Noni & Monoi Smooth & Repair Nourishing Hair Masque (SRNHM), Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Treatment Masque (SGRTM) from the newer line and the Yucca & Plantain Anti-Breakage Strengthening Masque (ABSM) which was reformulated, so far the SRNHM has been my favorite.

This product makes 10 claims: age defy, color protect, hydrate, nourish, soften, anti-stress, deep condition, revive body, strengthen and shine.  I am not exactly sure how you can prove some of these claims, however I can attest that after use my hair did feel deep conditioned, hydrated, nourished, softened and strengthened.  Like many other products by this brand, TORSHM has a very strong scent, this one is fruity, and it does linger for quite a while. If you are opposed to strong scents you may want to give this one a pass.   Overall, I would repurchase this product, however it is still the 2nd best deep conditioner after the SRNHM.

Wonder Curl RESTORING HAIR TREATMENT

Wonder Curl

Restoring Hair Treatment

$22 / 8oz

Available online at WonderCurl.com

ing: Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sorbitan Laurate, Shea Better, Avocado Butter, Olive Oil, Tamanu Seed Oil, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Niacinamide and Sodium Starch Octenyl Succinate and Calcium Pantothenate and Maltodextrin and Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate and Tocopheryl Acetate and Pyridoxine HCL and Silica, Phenoxyethanol

*Note the ingredients listed above were transcribed straight from the jar. A different ingredient list is on the website. I have no idea when or why the ingrendients changed.

From their website: An intensive deep hair treatment that strengthens, moisturizes and smooths your hair. Olive oil can easily penetrate into the hair, passing through the layers of cuticles to provide a deep moisturizer for the hair and mend split ends. Avocado prevents hair loss and promotes hair growth. Shea butter is rich in vitamins A & E. It soothes dryness, repairs breakage and mends split ends. Tamanu oil regenerates, strengthens and protects hair. Plus, Vitamins E, C, B3 & B6 to protect hair, stimulate growth and maintain moisture for healthy hair.

I was sent the entire Wonder Curl product line to review from the company.  I was really only familiar with the curl definer and had no idea they had a complete product line.  I used the Restoring Hair Treatment twice, once on me and the other on my son.  When I used it on my hair it was just okay. I applied it to clean, freshly washed hair, then used my Hair Therapy Wrap for 20 minutes.  It wasn’t the wow I was expecting from the RHT, it just felt like an average DC.  However it was a much different outcome when I used it on JK’s locs.  After swimming I washed his locs with a clarifying shampoo, then applied the RHT, covered his hair with a plastic cap and let him play for about 25 minutes.  After rinsing his hair was super soft and moisturized. The conditioner rinsed clean from his locs and left no residue.  I was completely blown away by how soft and conditioned his hair felt especially after spending the morning in a chlorinated pool and washing with a clarifiying shampoo which is known to be very harsh.  I would highly recommend this product for high porosity, excessively dry, or damaged hair.

Shea Moisture

Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Treatment Masque

$12.99 / 12 oz

Available at SheaMoisture.com Target, ULTA, Walgreens

ing: Water (Aqua), Cetyl Alcohol, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Glycerin, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*, Stearyl Alcohol, Fragrance (Essential Oil Blend), Behentrimonium Chloride, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein PG-Propyl Silanetriol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil*, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Mauritia Flexuosa Fruit Oil, Yeast Extract, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Vinegar, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3, Niacin, Dextran, Trifolium Pratense (Clover) Flower Extract, Caramel, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Extract *Certified Organic Ingredient

From their website: This deep conditioning masque helps restore strength and resilience to damaged, brittle or chemically processed hair.  Perfect for those who regularly color, straighten, perm or heat style their hair, as well as kinky, curly or wavy natural styles.  Formulated with nutrient-rich Jamaican Black Castor Oil and certified organic Shea Butter to replenish moisture and soften while strengthening hair.  Helps promote growth by supporting hair’s elasticity, reducing the appearance of breakage and shedding.

Shea Moisture has been on a roll lately releasing new products and I will admit the PJ in me wants to check them out.  Previously, I tried some of their older products and the results were lackluster. Recently I reviewed the Tahitian Noni & Monoi Smooth & Repair Nourishing Hair Masque and was very impressed.  Shea Moisture sent me a sample of Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Treatment Masque and it arrived in good time because I am now out of the SRNHM.  In following with my March hair goal I applied the product to clean wet hair and deep conditioned with heat using my Hair Therapy Wrap for about 25 minutes.

So here are my overall feelings about the SGRTM: the slip was minimal, the consistency was thinner than others in this line making it easier to apply, the smell is strange kind of reminds me of play doh but it’s very light and does not linger, and finally the results were okay.  When I rinsed out my hair was soft but there was something missing, no wow factor.  I would compare SGRTM to the Shea Moisture African Black Soap Purification Masque in terms of results, both were just okay for me but if you like ABSPM you will probably like the SGRTM. As for me I would not purchase this product because SRNHM was soooo much better in smell and performance.

(Side note: why do Shea Moisture products have such long names?)

Shea Moisture

Smooth & Repair Nourishing Hair Masque

$12 / 12 oz

ing: Deionized Water, Butyrosperum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Vegetable Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Cetearyl Alocohol (Coconut Oil), Castor (Ricinus Communis) Seed Oil, Sentrimonium Chloride, Oleth-10, Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B-5), Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Tiare (Gardenia Tahitensis) Flower, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil*, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Behentrimonium Chloride, Argania Spinosa Kernal Oil, Glyceryl Caprylate, Marinda Citrifolia (Noni) Extract, Glyceryl Undecylenate, Pythic Acid

From their website “Shea Moisture ‘s Tahitian Noni & Monoi Smooth & Repair Nourishing Hair Masque provides deep conditioning and infuses hair with a powerful dose of moisture. Shea Moisture’s hair conditioning treatment smooths the hair cuticle, controls frizz and maintains straight styles.”

Here’s a confession, I have never been a big fan of Shea Moisture deep conditioners. They work okay but I haven’t swooned by their performance.  My blogger bro Jor-El at ManeMan blog understands the way I feel.  These DC’s tend to be softening but do not offer much by the way of slip and I want my DCs to do it all. Also they are super thick that is something hi-po’s tend to love but I often wonder if it’s really penetrating.  I won a Target giftcard from TribeCalledCurl and I was lured to SRNHM while strolling the natural hair aisle.  I am not sure what made me do it after being hurt so many times before but it smelled good and I like the color green so yeah I bought it anyway.

For the month of March I set a hair goal to deep condition every week with heat to really pamper and improve the condition of my hair.  This is the method I used with the SRNHM and I really loved it. I don’t know if the SRNHM formula is just better or whether adding heat made it magic but either way its a keeper! After use my hair felt softer and smoother.  There are easily 6+ applications in this jar and the $1 per ounce price point is perfect for my budget. *adds to repeat buy list*

Product Review: Blensblend 3-in-1 Conditioner

I stumbled across this product one late night on one of the many natural hair message boards I follow.  What immediately grabbed my attention was the low-waste packaging the product is sold in. I did a google search for the product and my interest was immediately perked with the ingredients list of the conditioner. The owner Marina was sweet enough to send me a package of the Blensblend 3-in-1 Conditioner, Blensblend Hair & Body Butter and Blensblend Charmeuse Silk Sleep Cap.

Blensblend 3-in-1 Conditioner

8.5 oz $9.25

Ing: Purified Water, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Behetrimonium Methosulfate, Cetearyl Alcohol (conditioning alcohol), Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5), (Vegetable) Glycerin, Emulsifying Wax NF, Cetyl Alcohol NF (conditioning alcohol), Avena Sativa (Oat) Extract, Prunus Ameniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Benzoic Acid, Dehyroacetic Acid, Fragrance (Natural Essential Oils), Potassium Sorbate. Caprylyl Glycol and Sorbic Acid may be substituted for Benzoic Acid and Dehydroacetic Acid. *May contain trace amounts of Shea butter.

Blensblend 3-in-1 Conditioner claims to be a detangler, rinse-out and leave-in conditioner all in one.  Water based conditioner is formulated with Grape seed oil, BTMS, Cetearyl Alcohol, and Pro-Vitamin B-5.  It is also contains Oat Protein, which is an okay protein for my protein sensitive hair but other PS curlies need to be advised that while it is not a strong protein it is still present. I have used this product twice, once as a rinse-out conditioner, then again as a deep conditioner and a leave-in conditioner.

5 Things I Like About This Product

  1. The packaging. I mean it is the whole reason I paid any attention to the product to begin with. The flexible pouches mean low waste and they can be shipped in variety of ways which means diversity in shipping costs for the consumer. Win!
  2. The ingredients.  This product is very well formulated with quality, vegan ingredients. I love that it is free of mineral oil, petrochemicals, phthalates and as an added plus is not tested on animals.
  3. Super concentrated.  This product is very thick and you truly only need a small amount to apply to the hair. I used between a nickel to a quarter-sized amount per each quadrant of my head.
  4. Great for variety of hair types.  I don’t think this product will be an everything product for everyone, but I think everyone will use it for something.  For those with dry, thirsty hair it will work great as a leave-in to quench your curls.  For those who need a quick shot of moisture use as a rinse-out.  I really loved it as a deep conditioner; honestly it was so good I did not want to rinse it out.
  5. Great value. Just over $1 per ounce this meets my standard for boutique product.  Especially considering this product can be used for multiple types of conditioners it is a great deal.

I am very pleased with this product and I will be adding it to my list.  I will keep you guys updated on sales and deals so you can check it out.  One thing to note is to make sure you add the product to soaking wet hair, it is very concentrated and the water will help distribute it amongst your strands.  For me after I deep conditioned I only partially rinsed out the product and used the residual as a leave in to twist my hair with a little oil on top to seal in moisture.

Product Review: Original Moxie featuring Knapsgirl

“All I need in this life I’m in, is me and my curlfriends” –African Proverb

All kidding aside I really do LOVE my curlfriends.  A few weeks ago I went on a mini-vacay to visit my curlfriend, YouTuber MonicaJoi aka Knapsgirl and of course we played in hair products.  Monica won a full-set of Original Moxie Natural Wonder products and we decided to give them a try.

There are two videos that go along with this review, a before and an after, that are filled with lots of giggles and hilarity. Monica is a purest and refused to edit them so enjoy our ridiculousness.

Before Vid

Get Clean No-Foam Shampoo: This was a strange experience for me.  This is a no-foam shampoo and it really doesn’t foam.  It feels like a moisturizer when you are applying it to your hair and it was honestly hard to tell if I had distributed it evenly or if it was even working.  After two washes I decided that it should be good enough. To my surprise it did get my hair clean and did so without stripping.  I would not recommend this if your hair is really gunked up with product, however as a daily or even weekly cleanser this worked great. It has a polite floral-nutty smell, hard to pinpoint but it was pleasant.  While the product did work, I give it a B grade, I would not purchase as I like the comfort of knowing my hair is clean and this honestly was just too subtle for me.

Everyday Leave-in Detangling ConditionerI used this both as a rinse out and a leave-in conditioner.  It did an okay job detangling my hair. There was not phenomenal slip but I was able to finger detangle without feeling like I would yank or break my hair.  Again nice subtle smell to it.  It worked much better as a leave-in conditioner or moisturizer than it did as a detangling conditioner.  Overall grade C, I would not purchase this again although it worked well as a moisturizer I prefer it to work better as a detangler.

Intense Quench Deep ConditionerEasily my favorite product in this line.  It did a great job conditioning and detangling my hair.  I will say that when I first applied it I thought I was going to hate it. The product is thin, like a leave in moisturizer, after applying it to a section of hair I allowed it to sit for about 10 minutes and that is when the magic happened.  Just goes to show a deep conditioner does not have to be thick or buttery to work well.  Overall grade A, however I would not purchase unless it was on sale because the price point of $17 for 8 oz it too rich for my blood.

Lux Locks Styling & Shine: This is a twisting cream that I used to twist my hair.  The product worked well, it was not too sticky or greasy easy to apply and left my hair moisturized.  I would not recommend as a wash-n-go styler it was not much of a curl definer.  The one draw-back is the smell. I don’t know if it is the neem, rosewood or what but the smell is strong and not my pleasing to me.  We mistook the scent for patchouli but it is not an ingredient listed in the product however it is in the same scent family.  Without the smell I would give the product a B for performance however the scent drops it down to a C.

Hair Bling High Shine PomadeI am not a real fan of pomades but I did like this one. It was not overly greasy and added a nice shine to my hair.  I did not care for using it to twist alone but it worked great when coupled with the Lux Locks Styling & Shine, so I would recommend using them together.  I can really tell the difference in softness and shine in the sections where I used this product. Overall grade for this product is a B, but like the deep conditioner it is much too pricey in my opinion and I would not purchase.

A quick shot of me and our camerawoman Nyra, before heading out for the night :)

I did get an AWESOME twist-out taking my hair down a few days later :)

Product Review: My Honey Child Olive You Deep Conditioner

My Honey Child

Olive You Deep Conditioner

8oz for $18.00

ing: Distilled Water, Olive Butter, Olive Fruit Oil, Honey, Olive Leaf Extract, Soya Milk, Natural Yogurt Powder, Olive Oil, Avocado Oil, Seaweed, Jojoba Oil, Violet Leaf Absolute, Orange Blossom Absolute and Neroli Oil and optiphen.

I received a 2 oz free sample of this product from Lollie of Naturally, one of my fav natural hair product boutiques.  I have heard a little buzz about these products but had not tried them so I was very excited to see them included in my order.  The product has a standard look and feel comparable to most deep conditioners.  It has a subtle sweet-floral smell but honestly nothing really stands out about the product.

I applied the conditioner to cleansed hair that I allowed to air dry until it was almost completely dry (It was still moist at the roots but the ends were indeed dry) I wanted to get a feel of what the product would do on its own.  The 2 ounces sample was barely enough to distribute through my entire hair but I was able to make it work by scraping every bit from the jar.  I applied a plastic cap and let it sit for 10 -15 minutes. After which the product has completely absorbed in my hair.  My hair felt soft and moisturized, there was no visible build-up on my hair and I rocked my big fro to church.  When I came home my hair was soft but dry, though that is what I expected to happen because this product is not meant to be a styler, I just chose to use it as one.

My final thoughts are this is an okay deep conditioner. There was nothing amazing about it but it did work.  I think it had okay slip, the smell was fine, and it did soften my hair.  I was surprised that the protein (soy milk, yogurt powder) in the conditioner did not negatively affect my hair — my hair is protein sensitive if you did not know — but it was nice to know I was able to give my hair a shot of protein with no ill effects. Bottom line would I use the product again, sure. Would I purchase it, probably not. There was not enough wow factor for me and I prefer thicker, buttery deep conditioners.

DIY: Rhassoul Clay Conditioner

This lovely recipe comes to us courtesy of our friends at Pura Body Naturals. They posted this picture on FB but it didn’t include any measurements so being the mixstress I am I took a shot at creating an easy to follow recipe.  Feel free to change the quantities as you see fit.

Rhassoul Clay Conditioner

  • 5-6 ounces Coconut Milk (half of a can)
  • 1/3 – 1/2 cup Rhassoul Clay
  • 1 Tbsp Honey
  • 1 Tbsp Vegetable Glycerin
  • 1-2 Tbsp oil (optional)

Mix ingredients together into a smooth paste.  Apply to clean, freshly washed hair.  Cover with plastic cap and sit for 20 minutes.  Rinse and style as usual.

You may opt to mix up another batch with the remaining coconut milk and put it in the freezer for future use. When you are ready to use simply place it in the fridge or on the counter to thaw and apply.
