Funny Or Foul: Jokes On Natural Hair

Maunda Oyin is a very funny comedienne who reps for #TeamNatural

These days it seems anyone who wants to get a lot of attention simply needs to make a video about natural hair as #TeamNatural loves YouTube. Now you can choose to gain notoriety by creating an ode to the natural woman as Drew aka sjsafety18 did  a little while back.  Or you can go down in infamy for talking trash about it.

The later seems to be the case for Zeus, aka Top Rope Zeus, who made the following spoof video on YouTube which was meant to garner laughter, but only seemed to piss people off (natural and otherwise).  Either way, I know that his intention was to increase his viewership at the expense of recycled nappy hair and jheri curl juice jokes and it seems that it worked.  So what do you think: is this video funny or foul?

On another note what do you think about the trend of men weighing in on the natural hair movement?  I personally do not care what a man who is not in my personal life thinks about my haircare choices, but I know some people like to see brothahs support their sistahs.  How do you feel?

  1. I’m done!!! #DEAD# Lmao!!! Berry Gordy’s first Motown microphone?! How did that girl not get weak as he used her head as the mike?! Shit is hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don’t bother me at all….and my boo likes it. *kanye shrug*

  2. I thought it was funny but foul too. Got mixed feelings but overly I don’t care(shrug)! I want to see what my husband’s reaction to this is b/c he is pro natural. He and I both will prop. laugh at this foolishness :)

  3. I may be alone, but I didn’t find it funny on many levels. 1. The topic. I am sick to death of random men thinking they have the right and/or obligation to comment on natural hair and to dictate to women they don’t know how to do their hair. And 2.HIS DELIVERY. He’s no comedian. He has no sense of timing, etc. He talked like he was reading off of cue cards. HE as a person, is not funny. And I have seen natural-bashing videos, invariably produced by black men, that could be considered funny (even if I eye-rolled it and disagreed, but this wasn’t one of them). I gave it 40 seconds and moved on.

  4. I think everyone is allowed to have their opinion but he talks like “natural” means “AFROS ONLY”. That’s the style that he seems to keep smack-talking, newbie naturalistas who do the BC or start while they have natural hair do opt for the TWA (teenie weenie afro) just because it’s an easier style, especially when you’re just learning about what your natural hair does and doesn’t “like”. I think it’s a little silly that SO MANY PEOPLE think “natural” means “AFROS ONLY”. He even talked about women who do the BC and “go natural” (though I think he said “cut their hair and go natural”). You can have straight hair and be natural!

The whole point of going natural (for me) was to walk away from all that crazy chemical processing. (I do color my hair, but only with my stylist and only with things she recommends–she has been natural for quite a while!) My fiance loves my hair… and he’s a white dude. GASP a white guy who likes a woman who DOESN’T HAVE STRAIGHT HAIR?! (WHAT is the world coming to?!) My hairdresser’s husband is also a white dude, and he also loves his wife’s hair.

I think men shouldn’t judge women based on what they do with their hair, but how they carry themselves! If you can rock out a giant fro, that’s cool! If you can’t even look someone in the eye with your bone-straight hair, the hair will not redeem the lack of personality. /offsoapbox

(sorry if it double posts, it didn’t accept the first time I tried to comment!)

  6. My husband and I did laugh but in the end even he said it was foul! It is discouraging to women who r going natural or still feeling awkward about being natural (twa). It is ignorant on so many levels bc he feels black women shouldn’t be how God naturally made us. That we r “meant” to go thru the process of relaxing to be made like everyone else. That we can’t choose to be natural like every other race. So that people won’t be shocked by our big afro hair. It gives into the stereotype that our hair is not good enough. That we can’t manage it naturally. That if you have “afro” type hair you shouldn’t go natural. Are you saying your black by having an afro? No! Are u saying your white by having straight hair? Uh, NO! Just plain old ignorant! That’s what I laughed at, his ignorance! Is it better to be bald from chemicals just to make butt holes like him happy? No! Do all men believe this? No! My husband loves my hair, kinks, coils, napps and all! If he didn’t o well! I have seen many men support their women going natural but their are some who need time to adjust and this video don’t help.
