Product Review: Shea Moisture Curling Souffle

Organic Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Souffle

12 oz, $11.99

Available at Target, Walgreens and CVS stores

I did not purchase this product, but was sent to review by the manufacturer.  Truth be told I met a company rep at a hair meet-up and was asked what I thought about their products.  I told them the truth: I didn’t really like them.  The products are shea heavy and contain protein two things my hair doesn’t care for.  However my daughter liked them on her hair.  The rep remembered my honest opinion and the week before the release of this product I was asked if I would like to do a review.  I was honored to be asked especially because I had a less than stellar opinion of previous products I tried.  She asked me to try it out and be honest so here is my review.

ing: Aqueous infusion of agave tequilana leaf extract and sugar cane extract, pectin, vegetable glycerin, Baobab pulp, Coconut oil, Shea Butter, Pro Vitamin B-5, Aloe Barbadensis leaf extract, Vitamin E, Flaxseed extract, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract, potassium sorbate, essential oil blend. *note i used the common names as opposed to the scientific as I did not feel like typing them out*

Before the product arrived I read up on all available information including this article on which gave a rundown of each ingredients and its purpose.  I will admit that I was super excited after reading the ingredient list.  I often do an agave/coconut oil pre-poo treatment on my hair which always looks great and wondered why no one has used them together in a product. Genius!  I was also excited that there were no strong protein additives which would surely spell disaster for my hair.  Once the product was released I saw several reviews on youtube that called the product greasy, said it weighed down their hair and was too sticky.  I took all of these comments under review to the use of the product.

I applied the product to freshly cleansed damp hair.  Because others had reported that it was oily or greasy I opted not to use a leave in.  I divided my hair into 8 sections and smoothed a quarter-sized amount over each section to avoid it from weighing down my hair.  Admittedly the product is overly oily, sticky and could weigh your hair down if you apply it with a heavy-hand.

So this is me after application *shrug* it looked okay but nothing to write home about.  My hair was sticky/tacky feeling and so was the back of my neck where my hair was laying on it.  My hair also felt fairly oily, but did not look greasy.  My curls were not really defined or poppin just sort of there.  I decided to plop my hair up on top of my head and let it dry for an hour before heading out.  This proved to be golden.  After about an hour my hair had absorbed most the oil from the product and was less tacky though it was still noticeable.  I did like the curl elongation or anti-shrinkage results except for the front crown where I have wavy hair which just looked a little limp.  In defense of this product my hair in the front looks limp with most products due to lite curl pattern.  I did love the add’l weight the product provided which gave my hair good movement and body while maintaining volume.

I opted to tie back my hair and went out to celebrate dinner with my curl friends.  I must say I received many compliments on how my hair looked.  The picture above was taken 4 hours after application: minimal shrinkage, light shine, and hang time.  My curls felt soft and maintained their “wet” curl pattern however the tacky feel was still present, now I know why others don’t use agave in products -_-

5 Things I Like About This Product

  • Awesome natural ingredients.
  • Once fully released the product will be readily available in most markets on the ground and has a fair price point.
  • The scent smells nice  but is not overbearing like previous products I tried from this line.
  • I was able to get 2nd day hair from a single application.  I put my scarf on at night, then in the a.m. I spritzed my hair with plain water and fluffed with my fingers.
  • It did not dry hard like many gels or definers.  There was no crunch at all, not even a crisp.

However There Are A Few Things I Didn’t Like Opportunities for Improvement

  • Less oil please!  I am medium porosity and am not a fan of most shea based products or heavy oils as they sit on top of my hair.  While this was the best experience so far I have had with this line it’s still is a little too oily for my liking. I think high porosity naturals will probably like the amount of oil.
  • Sticky hair is just tacky.  (Punny right?, lol) I love the way my curls respond to agave nectar, but I do not like the feeling of sticky hair.  It was still sticky on day two. I need less tacky feeling.

Final thoughts on this product is that I would recommend it to others.  As for me I would not purchase it again without the improvements listed above.  I suffer from hand-in-hair syndrome so prefer touchably soft hair over good looking hair.  However if I was in need for a good on the ground product for wash-n-go I would grab it in a pinch.

  1. My daughter just begun using Shea Moisture products. She loves them. They are not heavy or oily on her hair, but I can see how the product might be weighing for some.I recommend this product naturals with dry hair. If your hair is well conditioned or naturally oily, it probably isn’t the best for you. In my case the, the products work great for my girls.

  2. Thanks for the review! I will try this myself however, once it is in my area but I also am not a fan of sticky hair since I myself are a HIH sufferer. Lol

  3. Try it with the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie underneath. It worked wonders for me! My hair is soft and shiny, but not sticky. If you apply just a little bit the smoothie underneath, I think you will have less tacky hair.

  4. What an excellent review! This is the best one I’ve read so far. I was on the side lines for a minute contemplating buying the product (hugh KCCC fan). I will give it a chance when it becomes available in my area. Thanks!!

  5. I have to say that this product grew on me with time lol I have thick, coarse 4b/4c texture and the first time I tried it, I applied it with a heavy hand. Although my hair was soft and the curls were great, the stickiness did bother me. But the second time I applied it I used a minimal amount and I opted to tie my hair back in a puff. I am pleased with the product after this usage of it because the stickiness wears off after day 2 for me. I am working on day 4 of the puff and my curls are still soft, shiny and frizz free! Even with a light application I would still probably recommend this product for thick, coarse hair rather than fine hair. I would also recommend that if you have long hair wear your hair up to use it to avoid the tacky feeling on your skin that you initially get with this product. Overall, I am pleased with this product and will more than likely continue to use it!

    • Awesome Rachel thanks for stopping by and giving your tips. I found that it really helped to tie back my hair but i still felt sticky. Funny thing is while I wasn’t blown away by it I did receive a lot of compliments on my hair. I wish there was a happy medium between this product and kinky curly.

      • I used the product for the first time after trying many products, and I love it.
I also have 4b/4c hair and used it with a heavy hand. It made my hair so soft and curls are more defined than any other products i have used. This is my 4th day and my hair is still soft. I receive so many compliments on my hair this week. I did the big chop in June of 2011 after wearing dreads for 6 years. Trust me I have tried everything, Mostly(CD products) and others and nothing works as well as shea moisture. The sticky is annoying, but improves by the third day, however your do will last for at least a week or maybe more.

  6. Now that I have read Rachel comment I think I will try this product. I saw it in my Walgreens the other day when I was going to pick up my Shea Moisture moisture retention shampoo. I have thick 4b/4c hair which is very hard on holding moisture. So if this keeps my hair from looking dry then I totally need this. I’ll let you know how it works for me.

  7. I have used the Shea Moisture Curling Souffle and found it to make my curls so beautiful, well-defined but somewhat a bit sticky. I learned that I must not put very much on my hair when preparing my two strain twist out. After I figured out that less is better, my hair still looked great. I use a spray mixture of olive oil, Shea Moisture leave in conditioner, water, almond oil and jojoba oil mixture to dampen my hair. I then dab just a little bit of the Shea Moisture Souffle on each section that I twist.
I have gotten more compliments on my two strain twist out using the Shea Moisture Curling Souffle than I have ever gotten in all of the two years that I’ve been natural. I wear two strain twist nearly everyday. My husband even complimented me about my hair. I asked him what looked different about my hair. He said that my hair looked curlier. Yes, it does have a sticky feel to it, but you must learn to put very little on your hair to get that perfect curly and define look.
I will continue to use my Shea Moister Curling Souffle. Thanks Shear Moisture Company. I got my Shea Moisture Curling Souffle at Walgreen just this December 2011 . I was not even aware this product existed. I had bought quite a few of the Shea Moisture products when they were on sale “buy one get one free.” I just happened up on Shea Moisture Souffle recently. I’m glad I found it and will continue to use it.

  8. I ran across this product on YouTube. What intrigued me most was the success some experienced when using the souffle for twist vs Wash n go’s. I’m not a wash n go kinda girl so I decided to give it a try.

I really love this product for twist and bantu knot outs. They look stellar. The shine is amazing. The definition is severe. I’m light handed and use the product on dry hair. I do have a residue-like feeling in my hair afterward. If I ‘play’ in my hair after taking it down I do feel the need to wash my hands. BUT I would still buy this product again. My hair looks incredible with little effort.

I’m normal density. FINE strands. Type 4 natural.

    • awesome feedback. It’s not my favorite product but it’s not the worst either. My hair always looks great when I use it for wash-n-go but it doesn’t feel great. I really think those with high porosity hair would have a lot more success with it. I am glad its working for you tho.

  9. It’s oily but I will use it. I actually bought this in December but was so disgusted with it that I never touched it again until now. I washed my hair and left no product in and used just a touch to section my hair which is fine in texture. It gave good definition as I let it air dry but is very oily which I don’t like. I will not purchase again but will use it.

  10. I liked your review, but I am a fan of the curling souffle. I have 3c/4a hair, I use very little on my twist outs to define my curls. When I first started using the product, I didn’t know how to use the product and ended up with sticky tacky hair. But I soon found out my hair likes the product when its dry to define my curls. For 2 day or 3 day hair I will spritz my hair & apply a dab on each coil to define & reduce frizziness
