Giovanni Smooth As Silk Conditioner

Giovanni products are SLS/SLES and paraben-free and are also made in the USA.  I picked up this conditioner from a swap at a natural hair meet-up.  Another natural actually picked it up, but I mentioned that I wanted to try it so she let me take some (thanks LaManda).

ing: Aqua (Purifed) Water, Rosemary (Rosmarinus Officinalis) Oil, Nettle (Urtica Dioica) Oil, Thyme (Thymus Vulgaris) Oil, Birch (Butela Alba) Leaf Oil, Chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis Flower) Oil, Clary (Salvia Sclarea), Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia), Coltsfoot Leaf (Tussilago Fargara), Yarrow (Achillea Millefolium) Oil, Mallow (Malya Sylvestris), Horsetail (Equisetum Arvense) Oil, Soybean Protein (Glycine Soja), Cetyl Alcohol (Plant Derived), Stearalkonium Chloride, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Trace Minerals, Citric Acid (Corn), Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Grapefruit Seed (Citrus Derived)

Let me start by saying that I didn’t actually read what I had picked up. I just saw that it was Giovanni and I had been wanting to try their products.  Had I known it was a protein conditioner I would have passed on it because my hair does NOT like protein laced hair products. Animal proteins are more potent then vegetable ones and this product contains silk amino acids which come from silk worms (an animal) so this was destined to be bad news!

So after washing my hair with YTC I massaged in a palm full of conditioner, but my hair did not feel covered so it took three palm-fulls.  After massaging it in to my scalp I was able to detangle my hair just fine.  The conditioner has a nice pleasant smell which  I liked.  However, after rinsing out my hair it felt dry and straw-like.  Gross.

I contacted LaManda to get the actual name of the conditioner, which is when I discovered it was a protein conditioner.

While I did NOT like this conditioner at all, I don’t think I can give a fair review because I know my hair hates protein.  As a side note LaManda used the conditioner and she liked it just fine.

  1. I still haven’t tried anything from Giovanni. I may try it if I see the products at a discounted rate or maybe get a sample size.

    • From my experience they allow the moths to leave the cocoon before boiling. I know that boiling them with the worms still in them is done but not by anyone I know. I raised silk worms as a child so this is where my information is from.
