September is Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness month. Sickle Cell is most common in those with African decent. In an effort to raise awareness there is a current social media campaign for ladies to put on a bold lip color,  snap a picture and post with the hashtag #BoldLipsForSickleCell.

I posted my picture on my picture on IG today,  but I wanted to spread this message to all my reader’s as many of us had friends or loved ones who are affected by this disease.

Product Review: TreLuxe Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer

TreLuxe Hi Definition Curl Enhancer

Hi! Definition

Hi! Definition is curl enhancing gel in the TreLuxe line. One glance at the ingredients list and I knew it would be love for me. My hair is always perfect with mucilage (snotty) gels and this product contains both aloe vera and seaweed extract, very slimey. There are also a couple protein extracts that are pretty high on the ingredient list but I did not have any ill reactions toward their presence.  The physical texture of the gel is very slimey, it could be packaged in a bottle, but I personally like it better in a container. Derby City Naturals Wash n Go with TreLuxe Hi Definition

I used this product several times once with including with the TréLuxe Untie the Knot leave in underneath and another using my ultimate favorite leave-in kinky curly knot today and both performed well.  I actually got 4-day-hair from a single application refreshing my hair each morning with a little water and adding some of the TréLuxe ReFlex serum on days three and four.  I believe I could have went longer, but I work out often and it was too gross to continue without washing.

5 Things I Liked About This Product

  1. The mucilage. I love a snotty gel they are always a winner for me.
  2. The product is well formulated and the proteins did not make my hair dry or stiff.
  3. I like the way the product works well with not just the products in the line but other leave-ins as well. As we all know this can sometimes be a gamble when mixing product lines.
  4. Lasting results. Multi-day hair is still a major factor when finding a good gel and this one performs.
  5. There are at least 4-5 applications in this jar which is really surprising for an 8 oz container.

Texting My Daughter: Don’t Mess with My [E]motions

I moved SK into her dorm room about a month ago, before leaving she of course raided my massive product stash for hair products to take with her to school.  Now I don’t mind sharing, I have more products than I could ever use. However she knows better than to mess with my favorite products, they are located up high on a shelf not to be confused with the lowly bins on the ground.

Imagine my surprise when she sent me this photo yesterday with the caption “Just found this in my hair box. My bad LOL”.Motions Straight Finish Styler

Lol. Lol? You have my favorite heat protectant and all you have to say is LOL? Who’s laughing? The following dialogue ensued between us. Texts got real
Yes. Okay maybe LaTavia comment was a little low. She should know better to play with my Motions Straight Finish Sealer. Check out my YT Review for my thoughts on this product line.

The Threat of Natural Hair

There are stories I am really tired of reading.  At the top of that list are students being ostracized by school administration because of their hair. From the elementary school girl who was kicked out of her school to institutions of higher learning that banned dreadlocks I am really sick and tired of this bullshit. How is it that a place where you are supposed to go and be educated, learn cooperative skills and social interactions with those different than you seem to always punish those who are different? What message are you sending?

My son with his shoulder length locs

My son with his shoulder length locs

So many of these policies tout “extreme hairstyles” as distracting. Why is it that these hairstyles deemed extreme are always natural hairstyles worn by Blacks? What is so extreme about our authenticity?  I have never been a teacher, but I have been a soccer coach, a girl scout troop leader and frequent chaperone and a room mother; if you cannot keep a group of students on task because a hairstyle is distracting them and derailing the entire lesson you have other problems.

The most recent of these stories comes to us from South Plaquemines High School in Louisiana where a teenage Rastafarian student has been given an unlimited suspension due to his hairstyle of locs.  A little education: In the Rastafari religion they do not believe in cutting their hair, and the wearing of locs is not required but very central to these beliefs. The student was originally suspended because the length of his hair was in violation of the dress code which stated that the hair could not be longer than the shirt collar. The student returned with his hair pinned up, but the school still deemed his hair to be in violation. How is this any different than a girl with long hair wearing her hair in a bun or ponytail? It isn’t the school is going out of their way to discriminate and harass this child. The ACLU has got involved and is helping the teen’s family fight the decision.

As I read about this story I heard Jay-Z’s famous line” I thought this was America people?” from his song Guilty Until Proven Innocent.  What happened to freedom from religious persecution? What happened to the first amendment? The family provided documentation to the school superintendent from religious leaders and the student was still denied to return to school until he cut his hair.

DCN Weekly Recap 8.1.14

Life happens and I don’t post as often as I would like to. My drafts folder is a hot mess of reviews and articles I never finished.  Sometimes it is quicker to just post a picture and comment on facebook or instagram than it is to write a blog post. But I am taking a tip from my boy Jor-El over at ManeManBlog and going to include a weekly recap.  This is something I can definitely commit to.  This will be a combination of sales, dope styles, hot topics and whatever else has caught my eye this week.

Upcoming Review: TreLuxe Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer

Derby City Naturals Wash n Go with TreLuxe Hi Definition Spoiler alert: I loved it. My hair + mucilage gels = happy Haley.  I was able to get four day hair with the TreLuxe Hi Definition Curl Enhancer.  I probably could have went longer but I work out 6 of 7 days and going four days without washing is super gross.  But man did my hair look good.
